Microsoft Invests in Data Resilience Firm Veeam for AI Products
Microsoft [NASDAQ: MSFT] secured an undisclosed equity investment in Seattle-based data resilience firm Veeam, aiming to expand its AI portfolio. The tech giant will integrate its AI services with Veeam’s infrastructure to build AI-powered data recovery solutions.
Veeam helps companies protect critical data from ransomware attacks, accidental deletion, and system failures. It provides immutable backups, ensuring that businesses always have secure copies that can resist hacking attempts.
The company claims that 77% of the Fortune 500 and two-thirds of the Global 2000 use its services to safeguard their data from cyber-attacks and disasters. By integrating Microsoft AI, Veeam aims to enhance its data resilience platform and help customers benefit from smarter threat detection, faster insights, and automated recovery.
The AI integration comes with an undisclosed investment from Microsoft. Veeam plans to use the funds to accelerate research and development efforts, boosting its AI-powered threat detection capabilities.
While the acquired stake and the investment amount from Microsoft remain undisclosed, Veeam was valued at $15 billion last December when Insight sold a $2 billion stake in a secondary sale. The company was acquired by Insight in 2020 for $5 billion, expanding by 200% over the past five years.
Veeam is eyeing an initial public offering (IPO), but no specific timeline has been released.

Baidu Completes Acquisition of JOYY's China Live-Streaming Unit in $2.1B Deal
Chinese tech and AI giant Baidu [NASDAQ: BIDU] announced that it finalized the $2.1 billion acquisition of JOYY’s [NASDAQ: YY] live-streaming business YY Live. The deal was revived after being originally set at $3.6 billion but abandoned in 2024 due to regulatory hurdles.
The acquisition of YY Live was possible after Beijing eased its regulatory stance on the tech sector, giving its nod for previously halted deals to move forward. Baidu previously paid nearly $1.9 billion in 2021 as part of the original agreement. It recently paid an additional $240 million to finalize the purchase. Meanwhile, Baidu has regained about $1.6 billion that was previously deposited into escrow accounts.
The acquisition is expected to diversify Baidu’s revenue and help it compete with popular online entertainment companies like TikTok-parent ByteDance and Douyin, which have been able to dominate China’s fast-growing digital video market after making an early start.
The deal also helps the Chinese company benefit financially by unlocking $1.6 billion previously held in escrow. The company can now reinvest the lion’s share of these funds in AI and cloud computing – two areas where it aims to expand amid increasing competition from DeepSeek, Alibaba, and other AI firms.

Mineral Industry (Sponsored)
AI and EVs are booming, and at the heart of these industries lies a critical need for metals like copper, nickel, and PGMs. As demand for clean energy and advanced technology accelerates, companies securing these resources are becoming essential players in the global supply chain.
That’s why one Canadian mining company is making headlines. Their high-grade polymetallic discovery in Quebec is drawing comparisons to Russia’s Norilsk Mine—one of the world’s richest deposits.
With industry legends Robert Friedland and Rob McEwen backing the project and a fully funded exploration program through 2025, this could be a rare opportunity for investors seeking exposure to the metals fueling the future.

Tesla Sales in Europe Tumble 45% in January
Tesla [NASDAQ: TSLA] saw its European sales plummet 45% last month, as the EV giant struggled to maintain its market share against growing competition from Chinese EV rivals and traditional European manufacturers.
Data from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) showed that Tesla registered 9,945 new vehicles in the EU, UK, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland in January—a sharp decline from 18,161 sales in January last year. In December 2024, the company led by Elon Musk sold 44,697 EV cars across the same markets.
Despite a broader 34% increase in Europe’s EV sales, Tesla’s market share declined from 1.8% in January 2024 to just 1%.
Meanwhile, China’s SAIC Motor Corp surged ahead with a 37% boom in sales, distributing nearly 17,000 vehicles and securing 2.3% market share, surpassing Tesla.
Tesla’s struggles come amid an ongoing EV price war, increased hybrid adoption, and political controversies surrounding CEO Elon Musk, whose public endorsement of Germany’s far-right AfD party has drawn backlash.
Some analysts suggest that one of the factors behind Tesla’s sales decline might be that consumers were waiting for the upgraded Y model, which is scheduled for H1 2025.
Still, Tesla shares are under heavy bearish pressure and this might be the worst quarter in years for the company.

The people of Texas are fed up. Like a lot of us, they're sick of being over-taxed and over-regulated.
And they're tired of the U.S. dollar being devalued and inflated by politicians in DC. So, the Lone Star state has taken matters into its own hands... and has begun embracing a new currency.
It's not gold or silver, and it has nothing to do with Texas' huge oil reserves.

That's it for today! Please, write us back, and let us know what you think of the Closing Bell Roundup. We're always eager to hear feedback!
Thanks for reading. I'll see you at the next open!
Best Regards,
