Uber Faces Setback as Taiwan Rejects Foodpanda Deal Over Market Dominance
Taiwan’s Fair Trade Commission (FTC) has blocked Uber Technologies' proposed $950 million acquisition of Delivery Hero's Foodpanda operations in the region, citing significant competition concerns.
The FTC announced the decision on Wednesday, highlighting that the merger would create a near-monopoly in the food delivery market, with the combined entity controlling over 90% of the local market share.
Chen Chih-min, the FTC’s vice chairman, stated, "Post-merger, UberEats would face minimal competitive pressure, leading to potential price hikes for consumers and increased commissions for restaurants." The commission also determined that the potential economic benefits of the deal would not outweigh the adverse effects on market competition.
Uber and Foodpanda have yet to comment on the ruling. Delivery Hero noted that Uber could appeal the decision or abandon the acquisition.
Initially announced in May, the deal included Uber purchasing $300 million in new Delivery Hero shares. Uber projected the acquisition would add at least $150 million annually to its delivery segment’s adjusted core profit. The acquisition was expected to close in early 2025.
Foodpanda’s operations in Taiwan were reported to be at break-even as of March 2024. However, this regulatory block throws a wrench into Uber’s plans to consolidate its presence in Taiwan’s competitive food delivery market.

Zoomcar Gains Momentum Amid Strong November Bookings and New Features
Zoomcar Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZCAR) shares are surging by more than 100% in premarket trading today, driven by strong booking growth and significant website enhancements. The company reported a 43% year-over-year increase in November bookings, fueled by high demand during India’s bustling wedding season.
To capitalize on this momentum, Zoomcar recently upgraded its website, aligning its functionality with its mobile app to offer a seamless booking experience. The revamped platform now includes curated car lists, offers, guest stories, and city-specific travel options, aiming to attract a broader range of customers.
CEO Hiroshi Nishijima emphasized the company’s commitment to enabling hassle-free travel. Additionally, Zoomcar launched a pilot for chauffeur-driven services, Zoomcar Cabs, in Bengaluru last week, diversifying its offerings beyond self-drive rentals.
The company has also demonstrated progress in financial performance. In its second quarter, Zoomcar reduced its net loss per share to $4.43, a dramatic improvement from $2,568.82 in the same period last year. Bookings rose 7% quarter-over-quarter, boosted by a 1.5x increase in repeat bookings.

Bitcoin Drops as MicroStrategy Expands Cryptocurrency Stockpile
Bitcoin is sliding 3% today even as MicroStrategy Inc. (MSTR) plans to issue additional shares to fund more cryptocurrency purchases. Other digital assets, including Ethereum, Solana, and Dogecoin, mirrored Bitcoin’s decline.
MicroStrategy, known for its aggressive Bitcoin accumulation, has filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to increase its authorized Class A common and preferred stock, potentially enhancing its capacity to acquire more Bitcoin.
This week, the company revealed it had purchased $561 million worth of Bitcoin at an average price near last week’s all-time high, marking its seventh consecutive week of acquisitions.
Bitcoin has surged 135% this year, outpacing traditional investments like global equities and gold. However, traders are bracing for potential turbulence, with $43 billion in open interest set to expire Friday on derivatives exchange Deribit.
Analysts believe that MicroStrategy's actions are becoming a major influence on crypto market sentiment.

Movers and Shakers
SciSparc Ltd. [SPRC] - Last Close: $0.22
SciSparc Ltd. is experiencing a significant premarket surge, with shares rising over 200%.
This uptick follows the company's announcement of an amended letter of intent to spin off its advanced clinical-stage pharmaceutical portfolio and its stake in SciSparc Nutraceuticals Inc.
The proposed transaction, involving a reverse merger with Miza III Ventures Inc., values SciSparc's assets at approximately $11.6 million.
This strategic move, by creating a new entity focused on the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical sectors, is likely to enhance shareholder value.
My Take: SciSparc's decision to spin off its pharmaceutical assets could unlock significant value for shareholders. However, this is a very tiny stock with high volatility so keep this on your wait and watch list for now.
Color Star Technology Co., Ltd. [ADD] - Last Close: $2.16
Color Star Technology's stock is surging more than 90% in premarket trading following the appointment of Shaikh Humaid Abdulla Rashed Ahmed Almualla, a member of the United Arab Emirates' royal family, as an independent director.
This strategic move is anticipated to enhance the company's global presence and attract new business opportunities, particularly in the Middle East.
Investors responded positively to the news, driving the stock price up significantly.
My Take: The addition of a high-profile board member has generated excitement. However, given Color Star Technology's 94% decline in stock value YTD suggests that caution is necessary while investing in this stock.
Palladyne AI Corp. [PDYN] - Last Close: $4.94
Palladyne AI Corp. shares are rising 19% in premarket trading after announcing a successful autonomous tracking flight using their Palladyne Pilot AI software platform.
